Prince George’s County was established in the late 17th century from parts of Charles and Calvert Counties. The region has a long history and one that is intertwined with America’s development as a nation. This heritage is an important part of the culture today; local historic sites and landmarks keep the modern lifestyle in touch with its background. Patuxent River Park, for example, features the Patuxent Rural Museums, a collection of buildings and exhibits honoring the farming lifestyle of the 1800s. These include a blacksmith shop, tack shop, tool museum and an authentic log cabin. There is also Rosaryville State Park, home to Mount Airy Mansion. The mansion has a storied history that involves several famous personalities, including George Washington and Washington Times-Herald owner, Cissy Patterson. Parts of the mansion date back to the 1660s.
While these sites offer a glimpse back in time, they also provide important recreational facilities for the residents of Marlton and Prince George’s County. Patuxent River Park is comprised of 6,000 acres of natural land along the river banks. The park’s extensive trail network, winding through marsh, swamp and woodlands, is popular with hikers and bikers. Rosaryville State Park, covering 982 acres, also has many miles of trails. Golfers will choose to spend their recreational time at the Marlton Golf Course. The 150-acre facility is Prince George’s County’s original public golf course. Featuring an 18-hole, par-71 layout plus a putting green, chipping green and full-service clubhouse, Marlton Golf Course is an ideal weekend destination. |
